Chapter 18

The Omni

Limerick, Prestone

At three in the morning local time, after playing his role of security for Larth in the high rollers room, two nightclubs, and a late-night snack, Jyrall made his way down the private elevator to the main floor of the casino. He hadn’t removed his custom-tailored suit, only the tie, shoulder holsters, and radio equipment. He’d find a quiet bar, watch sports with a drink, and just relax. What any normal employee might do after a long shift.

The bars at the Omni operated at all hours, and the casino remained busy. He’d identified a sports bar with booths and tables built for multiple species at the far end of the table games area and made his way there. Sure enough, though the tables and booths were packed, there were seats at the bar.

He grabbed a seat. Of the dozen places, only two were occupied by a pair of Veetch cuddled close together at one end. He sat down, and the embedded Tri-V came to life.

Sitting at the bar requires you play this console. Insert chips or a UACC to play.

Jyrall took one of Larth’s 10,000 credit hotel tokens and inserted it into the machine in the hopes the amount would turn off the notifications and requirements and just let him sit in peace. No such luck.

A Jivool bartender approached. His name tag read “Vlad.” He tossed a towel over his shoulder and placed a coaster in front of Jyrall. “What can I get you?”

“Bourbon. Water back.”

The Jivool nodded. “Long day, or just getting started?”

“A bit of both.” Jyrall laughed. He pointed up to the screen. “No offense, but can we watch something else?”

Vlad turned and laughed. “Yeah, I’m with you. What’s that even called?”

Jyrall knew it was something that translated as skitter ball, a Jeha favorite, and it looked like a whole bunch of thrashing, twisting, and flicking Jeha in a bowl. “No idea.”

The Jivool touched the screen. Human football appeared. Not the soccer type, either, which made Jyrall happy. “This okay? Not much on this time of morning.”

“That’s fine,” Jyrall grunted, sounding disappointed. In truth, he was interested in the game. It was recorded, but it was the Atlanta Falcons playing the New Orleans Saints. Ricky and Keaton would hate that they’d missed it.

Vlad brought his bourbon and a tall glass of water and left him alone. The console buzzed, and Jyrall resignedly tapped the screen, selected a five card draw game, and decided to play as slow as he possibly could. He won two credits with the first hand—a pair of kings—before losing the next several.

He looked up from the console and saw the Falcons kick the ball to the Saints to start the second half. Jyrall lounged in the chair and reached a long arm over the adjacent one just as he caught sight of a Human female with blonde hair swept up on top of her head walking into the bar. She wore a tight blue dress and a simple, yet stunning necklace that matched the earrings dangling from her ears.
